Further Fudanshi terminology research:

according to Japanese wikipedia (machine translated)

Fudanshi , all- name fudanshi (Japanese: fudanshi / Fudanshi Fudanshi ) , yasaku fudanshi ( fudanshi / fukei Fukē ), fujoshi ’s lyricism, Sokushi-kiri BL , Bara , Yaoi ’s works men [1] . “Rotten brother” is a model of “parents” [1] , appeared in 2002, first seen on PINK channel ( Japanese : PINK channel ) 801 board [2]

translated from:

So from this, we can glean that the term “fudanshi” first gained usage around 2002, on Japanese imageboards. Specifically PINK channel which was an adults only imageboard.

Bro this happened to me recently and I’m still like ???? about itso a bit ago I posted an essay on ao3 breaking down the dynamics to one of the biggest ships in my fandom and showing, without a doubt, with evidence from the text (in-text citations, my beloved!) it’s canonically a toxic mess so the antis (who are naturally all about EWWWWW TOXIC!!!) who are so in love with it simply because it’s lgbt are hypocrites for shipping it (because of COURSE they ignore the toxicity *ahem* I mean sexual tension when it’s THEIR favorite, they’re the special exception to the rules)I got a comment from someone who sounds very much like an old anti I used to hang around and I’m 60% sure it actually is them. It was a first comment, and the anti I used to know deleted their ao3 account recently (I was rereading one of my old works when I saw their account was deleted) and seems to be gone off social media. Which. Good riddance. But now I think they could be anywhere.I’ve responded to all comments I got on my essay except theirs because it’s sus to me.

I feel you, fam, do not engage with any comments that you feel are sus. There’s no reason to.

Also, would love to read this essay, but I’m a nosy guy.

“But what if a child sees this content?”

This content is appropriate for, and within the rules of the platform that it was posted to.

It is not my job to moderate the content of a site to a higher degree than the actual site moderators.

Children who are uncomfortable with the content posted to a site where it is allowed to be should remove themselves to a site that is more heavily moderated.

Antis are trying to moderate the content of spaces that are not moderated to the degree they prefer.

Antis are mini-modding.

Are you fucking serious right now?

I’m starting to think antis may have a point about how curating yourself online doesn’t work. Because no matter how many of these fuckers I block on TikTok, TikTok still keeps recommending them to me! I don’t even interact with proship related content besides the Shipping Professor just not hating people for the ships they ship or Emery Lee who actually brings nuance on how censorship is bad from an author’s pov. Neither of which have said they were proship. So why, in the fuck, are you recommending me anti discourse talking points?!

Also in case anyone is wondering, a proship art style is not an actual thing. Your opinion on fiction doesn’t determine an art style. I’ve seen thorki shippers draw the most realistic art of those two ever and I’ve seen Danganronpa shippers draw adult x WOH fanart that is akin to a child drawing it(and I say that as a compliment, child like drawings got charm to it). And I’ve seen antis have the same range in art style as well. So stfu about what is a proship art style and an antiship art style. There’s no such thing, you terminally online grelims.

Yeah, curating your own content specifically does not work on TikTok because it’s deliberately designed not to.

Our opinion of tiktok is that it is bad, and makes people worse.

What is triggering content?

We talk a lot about how antis don’t seem to understand that the things that make them upset are comforting to some people, and the things that are comforting to them are upsetting and traumatic to some people.

We also talk about how it’s okay to block anyone for any reason.

Yesterday we had to block someone who was a frequent poster in one of our favorite fandom tags.

This person was not doing ANYTHING wrong by posting their content. It was all correctly tagged and 100% legal, and allowed by tumblr’s TOS.

But their posts were extremely triggering to Toko, to the point where he was getting extremely upset any time we’d see their content in the tag, which was frequently.

What were they posting?

Posts about loving, happy, normal nuclear families. Posts about pregnancy, and babies, and being excited to be a mother. Posts about being the mother of small children.

Totally normal, twee, cutesy, heteronormative comfortable family and romantic posts.

And they had Toko on the verge of a breakdown due to his own trauma. Seeing that particular kind of content, over and over again, specifically for certain characters was extremely triggering for him. Made him feel nauseous, anxious, upset, and genuinely unsafe.

So we blocked that person.

They were not doing anything wrong.

You NEVER know what kind of content is going to be upsetting or triggering for someone. What is extremely wholesome content to you might be extremely repellent and upsetting, and triggering to another person.

Just because you are uncomfortable with one type of content doesn’t mean someone else is.

One person might be triggered by violent, sexual, aggressive or strange content, and another person, like us, like Toko, might find that same content comforting and safe.

Another person might be triggered by what you think is wholesome.

Please think about that before you try to tell people what kind of content they are or aren’t allowed to post according to you.

Is it true that censoring potential triggers with asterisks, numbers and letters makes it more harder for people with reading disabilities to read and people will fill in the blanks and know what the word is anyways?

Yes, its absolutely true.

It also makes it harder or impossible for people who are triggered by those things to create strong filters online to keep from seeing them.

If you’re talking about rape, and you write it r*pe, then someone who has the word “rape” filtered will now SEE THAT POST that they were trying to avoid.

Censoring words that way is explicitly useful for GETTING AROUND FILTERS on sites that automatically filter those words. Censoring them is to avoid machine censorship so that the topics can be discussed, it is not to help people who don’t want to see them.

On a site like tumblr that doesn’t autocensor topics like that the best thing you can do is write them out fully so that people who are trying to filter them out can do so.

Well, history certainly repeats itself! Many fans are leaving Twitter, and it’s uncertain where they’ll go. But this isn’t the first time fans have decided to move platforms, nor will it be the last. The Life and Death of Fandom Platforms, a video essay by Casey Fiesler (@cfiesler), details her research into why and how fans change platforms.

Although the video was published in 2020, we saw the beginnings of this research in 2018, when Fiesler put out a call for participants here on Tumblr. Her survey received almost 2,000 respondents, who were able to tell her about their moves from LiveJournal and Usenet to Tumblr and AO3.

Come find quotes from the video and hear fans’ responses on Fanlore!

We value every contribution to our shared fandom history. If you’re new to editing Fanlore or wikis in general, visit our New Visitor Portal to get started or ask us questions here!

Please remember:

♦ No person is sole arbiter of what is or isn’t disgusting, upsetting, triggering, or immoral.

♦ What you feel is wholesome and comforting can be disgusting, upsetting, triggering, or immoral to another person.

♦ There is no arbitrary set of rules to enforce that can make everyone feel comfortable and safe.

♦ Please tag your content accurately so that the people who want to find it can find it, and the people who want to filter it can filter it.

♦ If you see content that makes you uncomfortable, please filter or block it, and move on.

♦ Dwelling on the existence and details of content that makes you uncomfortable and upset is never healthy, and can only make you more upset.

Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.

I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.

Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.

Idk Maybe cherish some things for longer. Reblog stuff. Interact with people. Comment and share.

Fandom is Capitalism now and I’m not being nuanced.

people also seem obsessed with only Doing Fandom about currently active works?

“oh, I’m so sad that show ended! I really miss the fandom!” who said you have to leave, coward
