I’m not really knowledgable about the whole thing but it feels like one of those slurs that can and should be reclaimed

Assuming you mean fujoshi:

Yeah.

The term has been used in Japan for 20 years now by fans as a positive fandom term to the extent that anime, manga, etc is actively titled in tribute to, and marketed toward, both fujoshi and fudanshi.

Arguing that fujoshi and fudanshi can’t be reclaimed would be pretty ridiculous in the face of actual Japanese self described fujoshi and fudanshi walking around holding stacks of manga marketed toward them with titles like “My Fujoshi Life”, etc.

That said, like all slurs, it’s in the usage. If somebody calls me a “nasty fujoshi” they are calling me a slur just as sure as if they called me a “degenerate queer” and I will act accordingly.

Further Fudanshi terminology research:

according to Japanese wikipedia (machine translated)

Fudanshi , all- name fudanshi (Japanese: fudanshi / Fudanshi Fudanshi ) , yasaku fudanshi ( fudanshi / fukei Fukē ), fujoshi ’s lyricism, Sokushi-kiri BL , Bara , Yaoi ’s works men [1] . “Rotten brother” is a model of “parents” [1] , appeared in 2002, first seen on PINK channel ( Japanese : PINK channel ) 801 board [2]

translated from:

So from this, we can glean that the term “fudanshi” first gained usage around 2002, on Japanese imageboards. Specifically PINK channel which was an adults only imageboard.

Early “fudanshi” terminology research result:

the term goes back at least until 2007.

Miyano Amata, known as the “Perfect Prince” for his intelligence, looks, and cool personality, is asked to substitute for his sister as an attendant at a doujinshi convention disguised as a loligothic girl. There he meets a girl from his class and they become friends, but he must crossdress in order to be with the girl while learning about the fujoshi fandom.

I’m very familiar with the history behind “fujoshi” as a term, but do you have any idea how “fudanshi” became a thing? I haven’t ever been able to actually find anywhere that agrees 100% on how “fudanshi” happened.

I don’t have any clear sources on this either, unfortunately.

I do know for a fact that fundanshi is used (and likely originated) in japan as well.

My best guess would be that it was coined in Japanese ‘fujoshi’ fandom circles to refer to members of the group who were not girls or women.

I’ll try to do some research on this and see what I come up with!
