One of my former friends used to support me, comfort me when I was down over people harassing me for my F/O, but when they turned their back on me they said I was problematic for loving my F/O, and “forcing them” to do these things for me… Like, manipulating them into comforting and indulging me. I still fear that this is actually what I did without realizing it.

Anon, the advice I give you depends strongly on an important factor.

Are your F/Os system members, soulbonds, or other real, people with agency of their own that you share your internal experience with in some way?

or are they just fictional characters that you write about and enjoy and play pretend with?

Because if they’re just fictional characters then it is impossible to manipulate them in any meaningful way. It’s like saying you’re manipulating a doll or a teddy bear. It’s ridiculous. There’s no need for you to feel guilty about any of it, because there is no real person for you to harm. Full stop. You’re fine.

If they’re system members, or other internal people with agency then it could be possible that you have been manipulative, or that your actions have caused harm.

Here’s what you should do if your F/O is a real internal person with agency that you worry you have been manipulating.

The same thing you’d do with any other partner you worried that you had caused harm to.

Talk to them about your feelings.

Communicate with them.

Ask them what they want, and if they feel harmed.

And if they do feel harmed, apologize, and ask them how you would like to proceed in the future.

a bit ago you got a (different) anon that was asking about the intersection between plurality and f/os, and you mentioned that the strong connection self-shipping can bring can form/summon (depending on your experience i guess) system members. we had this happen to us recently and honestly i don’t even know if there’s a point to this message i just like… got so excited seeing someone talk about this and say “yeah this is a thing that can happen.”it’s totally new territory for me (we have some fictives sure but he feels like… a different type of fictive i have no idea how to explain it) and i’ve never seen anyone talk about it, maybe because there isn’t a lot of intersection between the two communities, i dunno i’m not super connected so i could be wrong or just not looking in the right spaces but.we’ve basically been navigating blind which has been working but that doesn’t make the experience any less “lonely” i guess when you’ve never heard of it happening before yanno. and i’m also struggling with a weird amount of guilt around it— a lot of overwhelming feelings both positive and negative. i won’t go into detail because i don’t want to feelingsdump in your guys’ ask box lol, but… yeah.sorry i don’t even know what i was trying to convey here, feel free to ignore this, just seeing that ask made me do the metal gear solid “!” thing LOL.

Anon, we are so glad to meet you, an so glad our posts resonated with you!

This part in your message stood out to me

we have some fictives sure but he feels like… a different type of fictive i have no idea how to explain it)

I think you should check out some posts over at our (very out of date) blog @soulbonder and see if some of the experiences talked about over there resonate with you.

Please feel free to put anything you like in our inbox if you want to talk more about your experiences.

when I say a character “gets away from me” or “didn’t do what I told them to do” I 100% mean it as a euphemism. maybe I have to make more unexpected changes when writing that character’s POV than I typically do OR maybe I tend to get very inspired and write new ideas off the cuff when writing that character.

olderthannetfic:

And when I say it I mean the character literally came and yelled and/or cried at me until I changed it.

We are not the same.

im a scaramouche fictive and when antis simp for me in canon im like “bro how r u forgetting the atrocities i’ve committed. just because im cute and have trauma and mommy issues doesn’t mean i didn’t do rly fucking terrible things” it’s just so funny to me

Isn’t it funny how antis hold blorbo responsible for the atrocities blorbo committed when its YOUR blorbo?

But THEIR blorbo is mysteriously perfect and unproblematic?

Is fictionkin or otherkin only for systems? A lot of the time, I see people refer to it as something restricted for systems, but I see other people refer to it as both for systems and people who arent in systems

Hi anon.

I think you have the terms “fictive” and “fictionkin” confused.

“Fictive” is a systems only term which refers to any system member that shares an identity with a fictional character.

“Fictionkin” is a term that means anyone who believes they are or were somehow, a fictional character. Often this has to do with belief in multiverse reincarnation, or other spiritual beliefs, but not always.

Fictionkin is used primarily, but not exclusively by non-systems, and has a history as a belief system going back to the early 2000s.

Otherkin, the term from which Fictionkin is derived, is also primarily but not exclusively used by non-systems, and like fictionkin, was not created in plurality spaces.

You can read more about fictionkin at fictionkin.org or fromfiction.tumblr.com

Imagine: you are a fictional child and minding your own business when some 28 year old pedophile decides to ship you with your siblings and or your grandparents maybe even your father then they put you in toxic situations that hurt you and they consider you there f/o and want you to love them. How would you feel? Would you even want to be around that sicko?

princesstoxicbutterfly-deactiva:

Well it wouldn’t matter because they are fictional lol

These characters aren’t real and they can’t get hurt lol

I’m not a pedophile lol

Antis are so unhinged!

There’s no one experiencing the fic you write or art you create.

The character does not have some independent will where they are forced to watch in horror while someone writes about them getting hurt or abused.

Fictives and fictionkin are real people who can close tabs and block fiction they don’t like.

There is no independent spirit of the character who is forced to live through someone’s creepy fanfic!

I wish there was a way to take recordings and pictures out of the innerworld and put them in the outside world.cause we have some really funny shit going on in here and cant show people. Also all of us sound better in the innerworld because the damn flesh sack of a body sucks ass at voice shit.-Aubrey from @antiproshipping

I feel you. We’ve started writing out funny conversations that happen in-system and with the partner system sometimes, because yeah, that happens a lot.

All of us look and sound better inside, or course 🤝

navelgazed:

People really think that you have a fictive of someone in your brain and they’re gonna act like they’re role-playing, when like. Okay.

It’s more like, hey! You are this character but also you’re a real person capable of change and capable of adapting and reacting to the world around you, which means that in a lot of cases the situation is going to change you as a person. Sure, the past is there but if the old reason for your existence or goal or antagonist is just gone now, what the fuck. How do you pick up the pieces from that. You are indelibly changed as a person because you now have to reorganize your entire life around a new and unfamiliar reality. And sometimes people react in weird ways and people change a lot, especially when you give them lots and lots of time to adapt to said new reality.

So yes we have blorbo in our brain but if you expect blorbo to talk like he’s still living in his old world and not this one, he’s just going to be confused and mildly put off.

Fictionkin, fictives, etc:

Remember there is/was more to your life than canon shows on screen/page.

When people write fiction, it’s common to leave out what the author feels is boring, and to concentrate on the more exciting, dangerous, stressful, and terrifying moments.

There is more to your life than that. Even if canon never shows your downtime. Even if it only shows your worst moments.

There are good moments. There was rest. There is tenderness. Even if no one else gets to see it.

It is in you.
