Though they are often similar, Cameoshifts and fiction flickers are different experiences. A cameo shift is a general term for a shift (mental, phantom, or otherwise) into something that is not a kintype. They can be a one-time deal, or be reoccurring, and can happen to therians, otherkin, fictionkin, and even non-kin.

Fictionflicker is a word to encompass a variety of experiences that people may experience that do not fit under the “fictionkin” umbrella. In general, they occur after the consumption of media (reading a book, watching a movie, ect.) and involve a temporary change in perception or shift to that of a fictional character. Experiences vary from flicker to flicker, and between people who experience them. It could feel similar to a kintype, or wildly different.  A cameo shift could be one result, or just feeling strongly like a character from that world or connected to characters from that world. A temporary “taking on” or imprinting on a fictional character or world.

The term can also encompass other miscellaneous experiences regarding a blending of one’s perception with fiction in a way that other definitions do not describe accurately enough, or are so rare they have no specific term

The main similarity between Fictionflickers and cameoshifts is that they are both temporary experiences, involve something that is not actually a kintype, and can be experienced by anyone otherkin or not.

I’m worried I may be a fictionflicker… How do I know?

Follow up question to the other anon asking about otherkin: Because I’ve heard otherkin/fictionkin folks talking about their “previous lives” I kind of assumed that was what I was experiencing, but also people say that being kin with something means being it entirely. I get really vivid memory flashes of other experiences/universes and I’ve sorted that into kintypes but the characters/kintypes don’t often feel super close to me and who I am: I don’t identify as them, although they’re part of me, but not all of me, and I’m not all of them. Sometimes they even feel foreign or invasive, but not always? Like they want different things than I do. Is this an otherkin experience or does this sound, like, delusional? Should I mention this to a psychiatrist whenever my therapist next makes me go? I’ve heard people talking about delusional attachments and I’m not sure what that is or if it matches better

Many otherkin and fictionkin experience their kintypes as previous lives, and generally also consider those previous lives to still be fully them without separation. Sort of how you’ve grown more than your 10 year old self, but your 10 year old self is still fully you, rather than a seperate person. That’s how past life kintypes are.

There are also otherkin and fictionkin who experience their kintypes in ways that aren’t past lives such as parallel lives, and embodiment.

And there are kin who have past lives that they don’t consider ‘relevant’ enough to them to personally consider a kintype.

What you’re describing sounds like something I might easily describe as a past life memory we’re it to happen to me. These can also be called noemata, of you prefer a more psychological term.

It also sounds to me like you could be experiencing something called ‘fictionflickers.

Fictionflickers are a type of experience where a person suddenly and temporarily experiences being a person from a fictional media, which may include receiving flashes of memory, or temporarily takingbon the personality of that character.

You might not be the right person to ask but What’s a therian/otherkin? Somebody (somebody I trust) told I might be “kinned” to a thing and while yes I have a very personal and very emotionally significant attachment to that thing, I don’t understand what they mean and I’m looking for answers.

Hey anon. A kintype (what your friend meant when they said kinned) is a very personal thing that only you can tell for yourself. Nobody else can tell you or you’re an otherkin, or if you’re a therian.

Here are some pretty decent definitions of the terms for you.

otherkin

n., sing. or pl. A person who holds the belief that they are not entirely (or not at all) human. Usually a spiritual belief pertaining to one’s soul and the reincarnation thereof, but may also be a belief that one’s genetics are descended from, for example, the Irish fae. The word Otherkin was coined to describe people who felt a connection to mythological humanoids such as elves and faeries, but has expanded in recent years to include dragons, gryphons/griffins and other supposedly mythical beasts as well as animals, angelic/demonic beings (angelkin/demonkin) and in some cases extraterrestrials.

Therian

A therian is someone who identifies as a non human earthen animal either spiritually or psychologically.

Therian is short for therianthropy or therianthrope. Theri= animal, anthro=man. Therians can have “shifts” but not all do. All therians understand that they cannot physically shift and are not physically an animal, they know they are physically human.

Therians are a category that fall under otherkin. Otherkin is anyone who identifies as non human. This includes therians, mythkin, fictionkin, plankin, etc. Not all therians are spiritual, some are psychological and not all therians have a connection with their theriotype.

  • Her theriotype is a rabbit.
  • He psychologically identifies as a hawk.
  • She spiritually identifies as a fish.

Exonostalgia:

Exonostalgia: The opposite of exotrauma. Events and experience that were experienced outside of this objective reality that give you a nostalgic or fond feeling.

People you knew, places you’ve been, and events you experienced, ect, that impacted you positively and give you a warm feeling to remember and think about.

I have been meaning to share this term for a little while, which I have been using personally. I hope it will be useful to others!

For historical purposes: exonostalgia was coined on 1/17/2023 by Jasmine of Sinister System and is meant as a term to be usable by all fictionkin, otherkin, plurals of all origin types and anyone else who finds it useful to describe their experiences.

Is fictionkin or otherkin only for systems? A lot of the time, I see people refer to it as something restricted for systems, but I see other people refer to it as both for systems and people who arent in systems

Hi anon.

I think you have the terms “fictive” and “fictionkin” confused.

“Fictive” is a systems only term which refers to any system member that shares an identity with a fictional character.

“Fictionkin” is a term that means anyone who believes they are or were somehow, a fictional character. Often this has to do with belief in multiverse reincarnation, or other spiritual beliefs, but not always.

Fictionkin is used primarily, but not exclusively by non-systems, and has a history as a belief system going back to the early 2000s.

Otherkin, the term from which Fictionkin is derived, is also primarily but not exclusively used by non-systems, and like fictionkin, was not created in plurality spaces.

Okay, so, fictionkin terminology has gotten pretty diluted outside the community in the past few years, due to a massive influx of casual interest in the community during a time while anti-kin were impersonating fictionkin as a form or trolling and harassment.

But I’m going to try not to go on a rant about that.

A “kintype” is the term for who you are as a fictionkin. For example, some of my kintypes are Vriska, Toko Fukawa, Sabretooth, Karl Heisenberg, and Revolver Ocelot.

Some people refer to the ‘characters’ they are as their “kins” but this was not even marginally accepted community terminology until very recently, and a lot of older community members including myself are more or less against it’s use entirely for reasons I won’t get into here.

The term “kinning” falls under this same umbrella of not being accepted terminology by serious fictionkin, and I explain why for this one.

“Kinning” is a verb which describes an action, but being fictionkin is not an action, it’s something that you are. You wouldn’t (in serious circumstances) describe yourself as ‘girling’ or ‘eightteening’, you’d say you’re a girl, or say you’re eighteen.
