Tag Archives: fictionkin

hi, i’ve been reading some of the recent posts answering asks about fictionkin, and i wanted to ask something as well.before i found out what fictionkin and otherkin is, i was familiar with a community on the internet that used “kin” as a verb and just said they kinned certain characters because they highly relate to them. i want to know if that is an acceptable thing to do, because i got used to using terms like “kinnie” and i’ve seen a lot of fictionkin say they dislike that term and the use of “kin” as a verb.so my question is, is it okay to say you kin a character because you deeply relate to their actions/personality/trauma, not necessarily because you think you are the character? and use the term “kin” to refer to those characters? and if so, how high should your level of connection to the character be to use the term, because there are some characters where i only feel that we have the same trauma, while the rest of our character is mostly different.

Hi anon!

First off, I want to say that I cannot tell you how to identify, or what words to use.

You should always use the words that you find most meaningful to describe yourself and your experiences. Your comfort with yourself, and your feelings about how you identify always over-ride how other people feel about the words you use to describe yourself.

That said, I am one of the fictionkin who’d prefer people not use “kinnie” or “kinning” or refer to themselves as “kin” to mean that they deeply relate to a character.

I want to be clear that I ONLY feel this way because people outside the community seeing people use “kin/kinnie/kinning” that way distorts the perception of what being kin is outside the community, and makes it harder for me to explain what I mean when I say that I’m fictionkin.

The feeling in the broad fictionkin community is that someone should call themselves kin when they believe that they really, experientially are in some way that character. Kin is something you are, not something you relate to.

The word that the fictionkin and alterhuman community at large uses to refer to the type of connection you’re talking about is: hearttype, though copinglink, faceclaim, or comfort character might also be correct under certain circumstances.

🔸Hearttype: A character that you identify strongly with, but do not identify as. A character you feel like you have a lot internally, emotionally, psychologically, or situationally with. A character you intensely feel personal commonality of some kind with.

Again, you should use the words that are meaningful to you to describe yourself, and I can’t tell you how to identify or what words to use. But as originally created, the term ‘kin’ (whether fictionkin or otherkin) means something you are in your core being.

You can read more about different terms for different ways to relate to fictional characters in this post which I’m also about to reblog!

Is fictionkin or otherkin only for systems? A lot of the time, I see people refer to it as something restricted for systems, but I see other people refer to it as both for systems and people who arent in systems

Hi anon.

I think you have the terms “fictive” and “fictionkin” confused.

“Fictive” is a systems only term which refers to any system member that shares an identity with a fictional character.

“Fictionkin” is a term that means anyone who believes they are or were somehow, a fictional character. Often this has to do with belief in multiverse reincarnation, or other spiritual beliefs, but not always.

Fictionkin is used primarily, but not exclusively by non-systems, and has a history as a belief system going back to the early 2000s.

Otherkin, the term from which Fictionkin is derived, is also primarily but not exclusively used by non-systems, and like fictionkin, was not created in plurality spaces.

You can read more about fictionkin at fictionkin.org or fromfiction.tumblr.com

I’m not too informed on kinning, but what’s a kintype?

Okay, so, fictionkin terminology has gotten pretty diluted outside the community in the past few years, due to a massive influx of casual interest in the community during a time while anti-kin were impersonating fictionkin as a form or trolling and harassment.

But I’m going to try not to go on a rant about that.

A “kintype” is the term for who you are as a fictionkin. For example, some of my kintypes are Vriska, Toko Fukawa, Sabretooth, Karl Heisenberg, and Revolver Ocelot.

Some people refer to the ‘characters’ they are as their “kins” but this was not even marginally accepted community terminology until very recently, and a lot of older community members including myself are more or less against it’s use entirely for reasons I won’t get into here.

The term “kinning” falls under this same umbrella of not being accepted terminology by serious fictionkin, and I explain why for this one.

“Kinning” is a verb which describes an action, but being fictionkin is not an action, it’s something that you are. You wouldn’t (in serious circumstances) describe yourself as ‘girling’ or ‘eightteening’, you’d say you’re a girl, or say you’re eighteen.

i’m experiencing baby’s first kin-related f/o here and it’s sorta throwing me off bc i don’t really know how to explain it properly. like. i don’t ship junko enoshima with *me*, i ship her with mukuro… except mukuro is me but not entirely and auauhaahahhh

Oh geez. Is this your first kintype?

If it is I would 100% put processing and understanding your feelings and experiences surrounding being Mukuro in general before you hone in and focus on on your relationships. That said, I can understand if that’s difficult right now.

Being kin and having all these feelings for people we were close to in the past is big, it’s heavy. It’s one of the most powerful emotions that we in sinister have experienced.

We have you in our thoughts, and if there’s anything we can do to help, we’ll be happy to.

I jusssst heard of the term mirealtive! It’s on pluralpedia! It’sss where you’re from a different reality/dimension and your “sssource” in this reality is jussst a thing that mirrors your experience. – 🍏 anon

Oh cool, interesting new word for it. The terms souldbond, walk-in, multiverse traveller etc have been used in the past.

Anyway that’s what we all are. We ain’t from ‘round these parts 😉

Isss it weird that I write proship fanfiction of my ssssource to cope with traumatic memoriessss of that source? – 🍏 anon

I’d say that’s a common experience and activity for people who experience being from a fictional source. For sure, we do it too!

That said, I’m gonna be nit-picky. 😉

It’s weird to write fanfiction.

It’s weird to be a fictive or fictionkin.

And that’s totally cool.

Imagine: you are a fictional child and minding your own business when some 28 year old pedophile decides to ship you with your siblings and or your grandparents maybe even your father then they put you in toxic situations that hurt you and they consider you there f/o and want you to love them. How would you feel? Would you even want to be around that sicko?

princesstoxicbutterfly-deactiva:

Well it wouldn’t matter because they are fictional lol

These characters aren’t real and they can’t get hurt lol

I’m not a pedophile lol

Antis are so unhinged!

There’s no one experiencing the fic you write or art you create.

The character does not have some independent will where they are forced to watch in horror while someone writes about them getting hurt or abused.

Fictives and fictionkin are real people who can close tabs and block fiction they don’t like.

There is no independent spirit of the character who is forced to live through someone’s creepy fanfic!

Your blog has made me sit and wonder if maybe the odd connections I’ve felt to specific characters were really just the Autism or maybe if they were some kind of other connection. I ache for them. I ache to be near them, to touch them, to see and feel and hear them as they are, beautiful and ugly and kind and cruel. Some I see myself in; others I see like old, ancient friends from times past. I’m also learning to engage with potential headmates. I’ve heard things, sometimes, when I lay down to sleep. Nothing big, but…it’s something, right? And there’s the time, a few months ago, when I heard someone say “Psst – I’m still here”. I got so excited about that…I should have been scared, but I kept hoping I’d hear her again.I never did, though…that’s depressing.

sabre-tooth:

So last night I was dreaming about implanted memories. Specifically disentangling ‘em.

It was the team X days, or maybe when we got back together to figure everything out. Dream context’s fucking hard to figure out.

Anyway we’re we’re talking about memories and somebody started talking about being a kid,and getting hurt in the summer and their ma tending the wounds on their face. Somethin about “moms hands rough from lye soap”.

And we all realized we had the same fucking memory, which didn’t make any goddamn sense.

And then I sorta half woke up and the dream bled into thinking.

So anyway I might talk about some of the work Logan and I have been doing on figuring out what the hell actually happened to us.
