When you are writing your first draft:

  • “that part isn’t good enough” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “I should go back and edit that” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “this part is too cliche” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “this part is unclear” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “this dialogue sounds bad” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “there isn’t enough detail” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “I’m bogged down in the details” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “I don’t know what happens next” is the voice of your enemy.
  • “no one will want to read this” is the voice of your enemy.

These are second draft problems.

Write it down! Finish the draft!

“Is it any good” is future-you’s problem!

I’ve been meaning to write this fic between a s/i OC of mine and a yandere version of a character from MHA. But I’m scared to post it. I keep pysching myself out of doing it. Like is it too self-indulgent? Is there some things I need to work out here since it’s gonna involve a lot(and I mean A LOT)of dark and triggering topics that I have experienced IRL? Am I being racially insensitive with my s/i being a mixed race person in a country that doesn’t like racial diversity despite being in a similar position? Idk, I’m self-conscious about it because I don’t wanna be insensitive about that last part nor do I want antis to come and harass me for also trying to work out my problems.

There is no such thing as fiction that is too self indulgent, anon. I hope you do post and share it.

It is always okay to use your dark experiences to share your perspective in fiction.

The world is richer for your fiction and your perspective being shared.

Not all art is about ‘goof representation’.

Meaningful art can be transgressive and challenging, both to the observer, and to the creator.

I really hope you share your work with the world, anon.

Newbie writers are often advised not to “write to the market”, and to write what excites them instead. I believe I’ve seen advice like that from you here. But when trying to snag an agent, they always ask, “What recent books is your work like? What readers will your novel appeal to?” Should a writer seriously reply, “I couldn’t find the novels I wanted to read, so I wrote one, and therefore I can’t tell you what its market might be”? Is there a better way to convince them to take a look? Asking for a friend.

neil-gaiman:

Nobody ever asked me those questions. But you can always answer b) with “smart readers who are craving something different”.

Remember:

πŸ‘‰ Most people don’t think there’s anything wrong with creating and enjoying fiction and art, even when it’s messed up, dark, problematic, taboo, or ‘gross’.

πŸ‘‰ It’s okay to make and enjoy art and fiction that’s sexual in nature, even if it’s dark, problematic, taboo or ‘gross’.

πŸ‘‰ It’s okay to make and enjoy art and fiction that some other people find disturbing or objectionable.

πŸ‘‰ Not every piece of art and fiction is for everyone, but every piece of art and fiction is for someone.

hi this is very unrelated to pro shipping and ships in general but i have to write an essay for grad school about myself & dreams and i wanted to know if you had any advice on how to get motivation to write something? i will try anything!!!! i have a block in my brain!!!

Try this one. It’s the best one I’ve got.

Open the document, and just start writing down words. They don’t even have to be related. You can write ‘blah blah essay blah’ or write ‘i have to write this stupid essay it’s total bullshit…’

And just go from there.

I find the physical act of starting to write is the hardest part. And once you get past that, you can focus.

Just remember to go back and delete the stuff at the top once you get into the flow! I hope this helps, anon.
