Chris held Jill close to his body in the darkness. It had been two weeks since the Arklay incident. They had both spent some of that two weeks in isolation. Now they were back together, in Jill’s apartment. They’d been up late into the night, holding each other, and talking about what would have to be done.
Chris would be leaving in the morning.
He didn’t want to, but he had to.
God only knew when he’d be back.
And so he held on to Jill tightly for the moment, and before he finally succumbed to the bone-weariness that seduced him down into sleep, he kissed her gently one more time.
Goodnight, Jill.
