I’m reading this and I do think it’s an interesting phenomenon that is being described here. There are topics about which a person can take a well argued and logical position but the position they take is actually one of the premises frequently cited to argue for causes that you are personally against.

This can pollute you against what are actually good arguments regarding the premise, even if they are being stated by someone whose reason for speaking them is to advance something that you don’t support.

Over time, the premise becomes totally associated with the bad argument that it’s part of – which makes it frustrating when you need to use it for a different argument, because the opposition will try and frame the premise as tainted by its association.

That’s the interesting part of this exchange to me but the context is pure nonsense. the replyers response could be boiled down to “James likes to murder people and bought a kitchen knife and Scott likes to eat people and he bought a kitchen knife too, therefore buying knives is a red flag.” meanwhile, the OP is a chef.
